ADD $1 Miami HEAT Donation Program
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is ADD $1?
ADD $1 is a Miami HEAT charity program that will allow guests at Kaseya Center concession stands and all HEAT retail locations (as well as MiamiHEATStore.com) to donate $1 to their purchase at the point of sale. 100% of the funds raised will be donated to the Miami HEAT Charitable Fund at the Miami Foundation for the benefit of a local HEAT-designated charity for the current NBA season to maximize impact and support the community that supports us. Proceeds for this season will benefit the Advocacy Network on Disabilities to drive financial stabilization, systemic inclusion, and long-term independence for local youth and adults with disabilities across South Florida.
What is the Advocacy Network on Disabilities?
The Advocacy Network on Disabilities champions the rights of individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by promoting inclusion, providing services, and advancing systems change. This mission is fulfilled by:
- Providing quality support and services based on personal preferences and needs;
- Helping you learn how the system works so you can become better able to get your own needs met;
- Making sure decision makers are aware of your needs for additional services – and for money to fund them;
- Bringing together and coordinating activities between and among organizations in our community working with people with disabilities;
- Sponsoring and conducting workshops, seminars, public education, and professional development activities; and
- Increasing the participation of individuals with disabilities and their families in all aspects of community life through capacity building, advocacy, and promoting best practices.
Why is it important to support the Advocacy Network on Disabilities?
Across Florida, over 2.8 million individuals (approximately 13.5% of the state’s population) live with a disability. In South Florida, these community members face severe systemic barriers and systemic underfunding:
- High Financial Vulnerability: Nearly 47% of Florida households live below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold or in poverty, making it nearly impossible to cover basic living costs. For families supporting an individual with a disability, expenses for specialized care, therapy, and accessibility can easily double household burdens.
- Employment & Income Disparities: Statewide, less than 23% of working-age individuals with disabilities are currently employed, compared to over 70% of non-disabled adults—leaving a vast majority under-resourced and economically isolated.
- Growing Gaps in Local Services: Over 15% of families needing support fall into service gaps—they face immense financial and structural challenges, yet fail to meet traditional, rigid criteria for state funding streams.
In recent years, financial instability has spiked among local working families, including household earners with steady jobs and higher education levels who were historically not considered at risk. These working ALICE families are struggling to manage skyrocketing housing costs, inflation, utilities, and the specialized, non-covered care costs of supporting a loved one with a disability.
The direct impact on the Advocacy Network on Disabilities includes:
- A 30% Rise in Requests for Help: Assistance calls have surged, with 15% of callers unable to access traditional safety-net funding due to widening local coverage gaps.
- A 22% Surge in Service Sessions: While total client volume grew by 10%, intensive service sessions increased by 22%. This surge reflects the extensive, hands-on time staff spend navigating complex systems and limited local resources to secure basic stability for vulnerable families.
